Diagnosis: No role.

Staging: Potential unknown. Not useful in the usual patient with prostate cancer. May be useful in testicular and bladder cancers but more data needed.

Restaging/Surveillance: Ongoing evaluation reveals utility in selected patients with renal cell cancers and in testicular cancer. Likely useful in other tumors where anatomic imaging is equivocal or unrevealing in the face of elevated blood markers. Not useful in prostate cancer except in cases with very rapidly growing, aggressive tumors.
