Specific Tumor Applications - Colorectal Cancer

Diagnosis: (Medicare Approved), No screening role foreseen. Primary GI neoplasms are occasionally detected on FDG PET scanning for other reasons. Villous adenomas are as positive as cancers. (this description needs to be updated by Dr. Lilien as it is covered by Medicare.

Staging: (Medicare Approved), The potential is largely unknown since there are few published studies. Likely to be best single test for staging because of superiority over CT both in detecting hepatic metastases and assessment of potential metastases in other sites.

Restaging/Surveillance: (Medicare Approved), Best test in patient suspected of recurrent or metastatic disease (e.g. with rising CEA) where CT scan has poor sensitivity and specificity. Best test in assessing results of chemotherapy.
